NY Post Pop Wrap (18 July 2008)

Not only do I unabashedly love "Step Up" (nice to meet you Channing Tatum), but I actually like "Step Up 2: The Streets" even more. And it has a lot to do with that young lady to the left, Briana Evigan. Her husky voice calls to mind Sophia Bush while her dancing would be right at home on the "So You Think You Can Dance" stage.

But dancing has been pushed to the side to temporarily focus on acting. First up, the hugely controversial "S. Darko," a sequel to cult-fav "Donnie Darko" that many fans are saying didn't need to be made. What's she think?

Pop Wrap: Right off the bat, I have to ask, are you nervous about "S. Darko" seeing how vocally opposed the online community has been?
Briana Evigan: I think everybody - including the director - is a little nervous. We have a big thing to match. We are all just hoping we can make fans as happy with this one as they were with the first.

PW: What is going to convince them to buy a ticket?
Briana: I can understand why people are questioning it, like why we would do a second one. But the script is great, as are the performances and the visuals. Also, the message in this movie is so important.

PW: What's the gist of the film?
Briana: Without giving it all away, the film asks what would happen if you could go back and change one moment in time. It's a turning point in the script and the way it's conveyed is sad, weird, odd, eerie and at the same time very real.

PW: Did you feel as much pressure on "Step Up 2" since it was your first major movie and your first lead role?
Briana: Absolutely. When I got the job, I couldn't believe it. I was so excited but once we started doing rehearsals, I felt the weight on my shoulders.

PW: The film's climax - the big rain dance battle - looks incredible, was it tough to shoot?
Briana: Yes. It was towards the end of filming, so everybody was getting ready to leave one another so I think all of our energy was right there. We rehearsed for a couple of months just for that one scene, so by the time we got to it, we were all very ready.

PW: Everyone in the film is a very talented dancer, were there dance battles going on off-screen?
Briana: Yea, everybody was showing off their moves during breaks, but it's not like we got competitive.

PW: So nothing like the dance battle going on right now with Miley Cyrus and Jon Chu, your director?
Briana: (Laughs) Yea, those are awesome. I don't personally know Miley but I think she's just great. I love that she's coming back with all this stuff. I also love that they've become such a huge deal.

PW: How often do you get asked if your dating Robert Hoffman, your love interest from the movie, since you two made out after winning Best Kiss at the MTV Movie Awards? Briana: Uh, probably like five or 10 times a day, every day. Still!

PW: And what do you tell those people?
Briana: It's a no. We wanted to make the show fun and exciting to watch but everybody wants me and him to be together. I think we had so much chemistry on-screen but we just didn't click off-screen as boyfriend and girlfriend.

PW: Can you blame them after the stars of the original, Channing and Jenna Dewan, became a couple?
Briana: Yea, I think everybody wanted that to happen again!
